WUJUA Shababi : Young Scientists at Sea in Mayotte
Wujua Shababi is an innovative program developed by Ceta’Maore that combines marine science education with conservation research in Mayotte.
Through classroom sessions and at-sea surveys, young participants learn about marine mammals, collect scientific data, and contribute to photo-identification studies used to monitor local populations. In its first year, the program engaged more than 480 young people and documented six marine mammal species, including rarely observed melon-headed whales, Fraser’s dolphins, and Blainville’s beaked whales (cf. picture). By transforming youths into active citizen scientists, the project both strengthens marine mammal conservation efforts and inspires a new generation of ocean stewards.
