Beaked whales in the western tropical Indian Ocean: a review of available information
Beaked whales (Ziphiidae) are among the most least known cetacean species around the globe. In the western Indian Ocean, information on their distribution, occurrence, habitat preferences, and population identity is limited. In November 2022, a group of researchers teamed up to review the distribution, occurrence and habitat preferences of beaked whales in the western tropical Indian Ocean. Led by Dr. Jeremy Kiszka (Florida International University/Island Biodiversity and Conservation Center – University of Seychelles), the project already involves over 15 researchers from the region from 10 countries. A paper will be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal at the end of 2023.
