Associate members are involved in cetacean research in regions other than the SWIO, in either of the following manners:
- Publication record as first author in peer-reviewed scientific journals,
- Enrolment in an academic graduate program,
- Demonstrated substantive experience in facilitating cetacean research.
They may occupy the associate member portfolio within the Executive Committee, attend Consortium meetings and engage in discussions at the meetings, contribute to Consortium fora and provide written summaries on their research and/or science based conservation work to the annual report of the Consortium, and provide expertise, advices and feedback regarding cetacean research and conservation in other parts of the world.
Associate members join the Consortium upon invitation by the Executive Committee.
